This training session is intended for those who are considering going into Care Homes to visit Residents on a one-to-one basis, to give spiritual help and encouragement.

The session is designed to last about two and a half hours, with a short break for tea/coffee. The tutor should have some experience of the Home environment. The programme includes:

  • Goals: Exactly what are we trying to do (and not do)
  • General points: CRB check, personal insurance, liaise with Manager, family, other agencies.
  • Do’s and don’ts at each visit.
  • Understanding loss
  • Listening/empathizing/touching
  • Care for the dying – questions people ask, honesty.
  • How to minister - comfort, support, offer security, minister to the spirit.
  • Practical work within the group
  • Resources
  • Items for pastoral visitors
  • Items to leave with residents
  • Spiritual needs evaluation guide
  • Handout – “The Grief Process”
  • List of appropriate scriptures.
